Clothing Donation Guidelines

We will accept your donations in a bag, in a box or on hangers. Please make sure your items are freshly washed and free from odors such as mold, mildew, cigarette smoke, or moth balls. We do not have a washing machine on the property.

We accept all clothing and accessories, no matter what season it is.

  • Clean, gently worn or new clothing for adults, children & infants
  • Linens, Bedding, Towels, Blankets & Curtains
  • Shoes, Boots and Clothing Accessories

Please make sure your donations are:

  • Clean
  • Free of animal hair

  • Not worn down

  • Not excessively wrinkled

  • Free of snags or holes

  • Free of spots and stains

  • Shoes should not be excessively worn, dirty, scratched or scuffed

Unacceptable Items:

We accept and sell CLOTHING, ACCESSORIES AND LINEN ITEMS ONLY. If you have other non-clothing items to donate, we ask that you take them directly to one of the other thrift stores listed below.

Seasonal Changeover

Twice a year, staff and volunteers change-over all the merchandise to display a new season of clothing. A “Quarter Sale” is held semiannually  in the Spring and Fall before the racks are emptied and the floors are cleaned.

Looking for somewhere to donate items that WVS doesn’t accept? Try calling one of these other thrift stores to see if they will accept your non-clothing donations.

Organize a Clothing Drive

  • Let WVS know of your intentions.
    – Call WVS at (507) 452-5591 and let us know that you are willing to organize a clothing drive.
    – Complete a prescreening volunteer interest form and submit it to WVS.

  • Cover the basics.
    – Choose a coordinator to lead your drive and team leaders to take charge of areas such as promotion, competitions, kickoff and post-drive celebrations.
    – Contact Volunteer Services to request collection containers and schedule for pick-up and drop-off of the containers.
    – Set beginning and end dates for the drive.

  • Set a goal.
    – Motivate donors by setting a goal such as a total weight of clothing donated.

  • Promote your drive.
    – Display promotional materials in high traffic areas
    – Publicize the drive in your bulletin, publications and e-mail
    – Raise awareness of The Clothes Shop
    – Invite Volunteer Services to speak to your group
    – Arrange for your group to volunteer at Volunteer Services or to take a tour of our Clothes Shop

  • Make it fun!
    – Have a kick-off event and make the admission price a certain number of clothing items.
    – Challenge other departments, faith communities or classrooms to see who can donate the most clothing items. Build momentum with daily progress updates.
    – Celebrate success! Have a post-drive party congratulate yourselves on a job well done.
