Are you a student needing volunteer hours for a class assignment? Are you a group looking for a day project? Are you an individual trying to get involved in your community? Have you been ordered by the Court to complete volunteer hours? Or are you required to volunteer because of government benefits you are receiving?

The following are available volunteer positions at Winona Volunteer Services. If there is a position or a task you think you are interested in, please fill out the appropriate prescreening volunteer interest form. This position requires a background check.
This position requires a minimum of a one year commitment.

Purpose Check out customer purchases, assist with shop floor operations
Time Commitment 1 four hour shift once a week, for at least one year
Location 416 East 2nd Street
Trained and supervised by Volunteer Coordinator will provide orientation, training and ongoing supervision
Responsibilities Volunteer will ring up purchases, assist in maintaining shop floor, attend regular meetings, maintain contact with Volunteer Coordinator
Qualifications Able to learn simple cash register operations, provide customer service to shoppers, able to work with a diverse clientele & pass background check

Requirements

Purpose

Sort through donations & hang best clothing donations for re-sale  

Time Commitment

1 four hour shift, once a week

Location

416 East 2nd Street

Trained and supervised by

Volunteer Coordinator will provide orientation, training and ongoing supervision

Responsibilities

Volunteer will sort donations, assist in maintaining clothing racks on shop floor, attend regular meetings, maintain contact with Volunteer Coordinator

Qualifications

Able to lift 25 pounds, possess attention to detail, able to work with a diverse team

Confidentiality

Volunteers will be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement. Volunteers are expected to honor the privacy of all shoppers, clients and other volunteers.

 

Purpose

Prepare boxes of staple foods for distribution

to those in need in the community 

Time Commitment

Anytime from 9am – 5pm, Monday through Friday  Approximate 2 hours shifts  

Location

402 East 2nd Street

Trained and supervised by

Volunteer Coordinator will provide orientation, training and ongoing supervision

Responsibilities

Follow food list to pack boxes according to food packing list.

Qualifications

Ability to lift thirty pounds and to work independently.

This position requires a minimum of a one year commitment.

Purpose

Assist clients with shopping and check out their selected food items.

Time Commitment

1 three to four hour shift, once a week, for at least one year

Location

402 East 4th Street

Trained and supervised by

Volunteer Coordinator will provide orientation, training and ongoing supervision

Responsibilities

Volunteers will follow procedure in checking cards, counting food points & weighing items, and sorting and stocking food and other assigned duties as time permits,
Attend regular meetings and maintain contact with the Volunteer Coordinator

Qualifications

Able to stand and lift 30 pounds, ability to count and record weights and numbers accurately. Able to work with a diverse clientele and maintain confidentiality

Purpose

Assist with placing delivered food from pallets to food shelf

Time Commitment

Fridays 10am – 1pm   

Location

Trained and supervised by

Volunteer Coordinator & lead food shelf volunteer will provide orientation, training and ongoing supervision

Responsibilities

Assist in weighing, logging, and stocking food donations. 

Qualifications

 Ability to multi-task & be flexible as additional tasks arise, able to work with a diverse clientele.

This position requires a minimum commitment of 20 hours.

Purpose

Deliver meals to homebound and convalescing clients or those unable to cook for themselves

Time Commitment

Approximately one hour, once a week, for at least one year

Location

Meals are delivered throughout the Winona and Goodview area

Trained and supervised by

Volunteer Coordinator will provide orientation, training and ongoing supervision

Responsibilities

Volunteers pick up coolers with meals at Steak Shop @ 10:45, deliver one route according to HDM guidelines and return empty coolers & route sheet folder to Steak Shop. Attends regular meetings and maintains contact with Volunteer Coordinator and staff

Qualifications

Licensed driver with current insurance & reliable vehicle. Ability to manage up to 4 coolers, pass background check

Confidentiality

Volunteers will be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement.

Purpose

Prepare packets with calendar and other information for distribution to clients in the food shelf.

Time Commitment

Anytime, 9am – 5pm, Monday – Friday.

2 hour commitment per shift

Location

Trained and supervised by

Volunteer Coordinator will provide orientation, training and ongoing supervision

Responsibilities

Prepare information packets as instructed.

Qualifications

Able to follow instructions to operate a copy machine, give attention to detail

Purpose

 Assist elderly and nursing mothers to carry commodities to their vehicles.  Assist with set up and clean up.  

Time Commitment

1:30 – 5pm on the first Wednesday afternoon of the month.  

Location

402 East 2nd Street in Food Shelf

Trained and supervised by

Volunteer Coordinator will provide orientation, training and ongoing supervision

Responsibilities

Set up area before project.. Carry boxes of food for for clients requiring assistance. Clean up at closing. 

Qualifications

Able to lift and carry #30 boxes, able to work with a diverse clientele.

Requirements

Complete and Sign off on Civil Rights Training

 

Purpose

Assist with weighing, logging and stocking

donated food from Walmart into Food Shelf

Time Commitment

Mondays, Wednesdays and/or Fridays
Approximate 2 ½ hours from 10:30am to 1pm any  Monday/Wednesday/Friday except holidays.

Location

Trained and supervised by

Volunteer Coordinator will provide orientation, training and ongoing supervision

Responsibilities

Weigh, log and stock donated bread, produce,

frozen meat  and other items from Walmart into

Food Shelf to be available to shoppers.

Qualifications

Ability to live up to 40 pounds.

Purpose

Help maintain a quality environment in the food shelf.  

Time Commitment

Anytime  9am – 5pm, Monday through Friday, one year commitment

Location

Trained and supervised by

Volunteer Coordinator will provide orientation, training and ongoing supervision

Responsibilities

Will vary but may include weighing, logging, and stocking food donations; stock walk-in freezer and cooler; sweeping and general janitorial duties, breaking down cardboard boxes 

Qualifications

Ability to lift up to #50 pounds. Ability to multi-task,

be flexible as additional tasks arise, able to work with a diverse clientele

Assist with Holiday Projects such as the Christmas Toy Store and Easter Dinner

Commitment

1 – 4 hours depending on the job

Either the Volunteer Coordinator or project manager in charge of the volunteers will train you according to your task

Assisting with Seasonal Holiday food, gifts and community meals projects

Getting Started

What to do when your organization wants to hold a food drive

Let WVS know of your intentions.

  • Call WVS at 507.452.5591 and let us know that you are willing to organize a food drive.
  • Complete a prescreening volunteer interest form and submit it to WVS.

Cover the basics.

  • Choose a coordinator to lead your drive and team leaders to take charge of areas such as promotion, competitions, kickoff and post-drive celebrations.
  • Contact Volunteer Services to request collection containers and schedule for pick-up and drop-off of the containers.
  • Set beginning and end dates for the drive.

Choose a theme.

  • Generate excitement and boost participation by building your drive around a theme.  Be creative!  In order for the drive to be successful, themes are helpful in motivating participants.

Set a goal.

  • Motivate donors by setting a goal such as a dollar amount, a can for every person in the organization, one million pennies, your group’s weight in food, etc.

Promote your drive.

  • Display promotional materials in high traffic areas.
  • Publicize the drive in your bulletin, publications and e-mail
  • Raise awareness of the problem of hunger.
  • Invite Volunteer Services to speak to your group.
  • Arrange for your group to volunteer at Volunteer Services or to take a tour of our food distribution facility.

Make it fun!

  • Have a kick-off event and make the admission price a certain number of food items.
  • Challenge other departments, faith communities or classrooms to see who can raise the most food or dollars.  Build momentum with daily progress updates.
  • Celebrate success!  Have a post-drive party congratulate yourselves on a job well done.
